Process Mapping Unveiled
by John Wilson, BPM Manager, PMC Solutions
What exactly is process mapping anyway?
Quite simply, process mapping visually defines exactly what each employee
or function in an organization is responsible for, their outputs and
inputs, and their operating parameters. This allows organizations to
measure their performance and improve their efficiency. Once complete, a
business process map provides a picture of the sequence of major steps
in a process. Boxes and other symbols represent different steps,
actions, and decision points. Specifically, process maps can show:

the
process as a whole

the
sequence of steps

the
relationship between steps

the
beginning and ending steps that identify the boundaries of the process
Organizations should use business process maps when they want to be sure
everyone in the organization understands certain functions or
activities, to clarify steps in a process, and to identify improvement
opportunities in a process. They can also be used to build consensus on
how a process actually operates and how it should operate.
inProcess by PMC Solutions lets you do all of these things easily and
affordably. And because its a Web based program, everyone in your
organization can see changes to your process maps instantly, whether
their desk is 60 feet away or 600 miles away.
